Environment Canada's Science and Risk Assessment Branch recognized for using GIS to Monitor, Account, and Report on Pollution in Canada

Ottawa, ON - The Pollution Data Division of Environment Canada's Science and Risk Assessment Branch was recently presented with an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada's ESRI Regional User Conference in Ottawa. Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, presented the Award in recognition of Environment Canada's use of enterprise GIS for monitoring, accounting, and reporting on air pollutants in Canada.

"The Award of Excellence is going to a very deserving organization that has been able to utilize technology to provide a precise picture of the sources and amounts of pollution in Canada," said Mr. Miller.

The Pollution Data Division is Canada's central unit responsible for the compilation and the publication of the national emission inventories, trends, and projections for key air pollutants such as Particulate Matter, Sulphur Oxides, and Ammonia, also known as the Criteria Air Contaminants (CAC).  These air pollutants affect human health and contribute to air pollution problems such as smog, acid rain, and visibility.  They are tracked annually in the comprehensive emission inventories, trends, and projections, which are compiled by the Pollution Data Division in collaboration with the provincial, territorial, and regional environmental agencies using the latest emission estimation methodologies and statistics, and incorporating the information from the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI).

The comprehensive emission inventories, trends, and projections account for the emissions from various sources such as transportation vehicles, industrial activities, residential fuel combustion, landfill sites, incineration, paved and unpaved roads, and forest fires. The latest emission summaries for these air pollutants are available on Environment Canada's website at the following location www.ec.gc.ca/pdb/cac/Emissions1990-2015/emissions_e.cfm

For over 15 years, GIS technology, through GIS-based models, has played an important role in the various activities of the Division related to the estimation, the spatial distribution, and the mapping of emissions inventories. The technology has also supported the demand for regional emission analyses and high resolution emission estimations. GIS technology is important to the Division in meeting the growing demands for emission maps required at the national, provincial, territorial, and regional levels to support air quality modeling, the development of emission reduction strategies, and for the dissemination of emissions information on the Internet. Further, the geomatics solutions are also used for the development of emission summaries and maps to inform the public and fulfill Canada's obligations to report on the emissions for various national and international agreements such as the protocols under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the Canada-United States Air Quality Agreement, and the Acid Rain program.
