City of Quinte West and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre Earn Top Honors for Innovative Use of GIS Technology

Toronto, ON - The City of Quinte West and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre stood out from more than 300,000 organizations worldwide that use GIS software to make a difference in the world. ESRI Inc. presented these two organizations with a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the 27th Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, California, June 20. ESRI Canada is pleased to congratulate both the City of Quinte West and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre.

"ESRI recognizes the passion of our very special users with our Special Achievement in GIS award," says Jack Dangermond, ESRI president. "The effectiveness of these people to infuse our technology into their real world contexts creates meaning for our efforts. For this we are grateful."

At the City of Quinte West, all city departments use GIS to provide services to the community. The technology helped them create a range of applications, including 911 dispatch, emergency services management, land planning and property information management, and public utilities management. The City's interactive GIS website provides information to residents, visitors, and potential developers, which in turn promotes tourism and economic development. Students in the community learn GIS principles and are trained on how to use the website so that they can apply their knowledge and understanding to real-world situations.

Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) is a non-profit organization with the mission to diversify the local economy by emphasizing information technology. The Centre started using GIS technology to solve many of the information management needs of the local Public Utilities Commission and Municipality. Over the past several years GIS has been incorporated into many other areas from data capture in the field to the online publication of cartographic products.

SSMIC expanded its municipal and utilities GIS solution in innovative ways to address health and social issues in Sault Ste. Marie. The Centre combines health and social related data with municipal and utilities data to improve services to the community. With extensive GIS data, services to the public can be customized based on need.
