Kelowna, BC - The City of Kelowna was recently presented with an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada's Regional User Conference in Kelowna on May 10. Myron Doherty, Pacific Region Manager, and Steve Schmeeckle, Account Manager, both of ESRI Canada, presented the Award in recognition of the City of Kelowna's successful implementation of an enterprise GIS and their Internet mapping applications. The Award was accepted on behalf of the City of Kelowna by Rod Allin, GIS Technician, and Brian Butchart, Business Systems Analyst, both of whom played an important role in the City's successful enterprise GIS implementation.
"The Award of Excellence is going to a very deserving organization that is dedicated to the advancement of GIS within municipal government through the creation and maintenance of spatial data and their ability to improve access to this data by leveraging Internet mapping technology," said Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada.
Kelowna is evolving from a small-sized city to a medium-sized city. People are moving to Kelowna to take advantage of the economic opportunities and the quality of life. As the city continues to grow, urban livability issues will be tied more to the community's economic vitality and standard of living than they have been in the past.
With a successful enterprise GIS in place the City of Kelowna is well positioned to respond to these challenges and to leverage this information to the benefit of all of its citizens. In terms of making information available to the general public, the City of Kelowna has implemented four interactive web mapping services accessible on the City's website, http://www.kelowna.ca/. The GIS-based Internet mapping services include the City Map Viewer, City Parks Map Viewer, City Cemetery Map Viewer, and City Water Provider Viewer.
The information and functionally rich interactive web mapping services allow public access to information in a timely manner, thereby reducing demands on City staff to respond to many routine inquiries. These ongoing GIS related initiatives highlight the important role GIS plays in the City's day-to-day business and will continue to have many long lasting benefits to the City of Kelowna.
