Powerful Crime Fighting Software Uses Spatial and Temporal Analysis and Mapping

Toronto ON - ESRI Canada announced today that it has become the exclusive Canadian distributor of the ESRI UK developed Crime Analyst, a specialized extension for ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop products. It is designed to provide advanced, flexible, powerful, affordable, and easy-to-use tools for geographic crime analysis, data management, mapping, and reporting.

"Crime Analyst is an extremely valuable tool that can help public safety organizations better understand crime trends, which assists them in making the most effective use of their resources," said Alex Miller, President, ESRI Canada. "This not only helps them better respond to incidents affecting public safety, but is also extremely cost efficient."

Since incident data can be organized by geography (location of the crime), in addition to attributes such as offender name, time of day, and type of crime, it can be displayed in a GIS. Crime Analyst will allow users to find the data for a certain time frame and area and display it on a map. Maps can include nearby landmarks such as streets and schools, while different colours and symbols can be used for different crime categories. This paints a realistic picture of the data, thereby making it easier to interpret.

Presenting information on a map provides a new perspective, while trends and patterns become more apparent.  Once incident data is depicted on a map, users can conduct further analysis to identify the boundaries of "hot spots", determine proximity to schools or gang territories, and generate reports summarizing events. Using Crime Analyst, crime maps and reports summarizing events can be created in minutes rather than hours and can uncover crime patterns like distances and routes between crimes, repeat offences, time of crime, and geographical hotspots.

Crime Analyst can be used for predictive modeling to manage field assignments and investigative efforts.  For example, traffic analysis can reveal the identification of selective enforcement locations, the types of citations issued, accidents involving impaired drivers, and more.

With Crime Analyst, each task is performed with the help of a wizard, an intuitive series of panels (screens) that guide the user through the tasks they want to perform. It is designed to be fully interoperable with other applications, therefore supporting the use of data from other participating organizations.
