GIS at High School Level

At the high school level, students begin to study more advanced geographic topics, in courses such as World Issues, Human Geography, and Urban Geography and Environmental Studies. At this level, there are countless ways in which a teacher can incorporate ArcView into the curriculum to enhance students' learning.

Using the ArcWorld database, students can develop an awareness of the "Global Village" concept. Using this database, students can examine major international issues such as famine, drought, over-population, third world poverty, and environmental disasters.

As an example, to the left you can see an illustration of a project oriented around global indicators of development. These indicators include such things as GNP per capita, Calorie Supply per capita, Birth Rate per capita, and Energy Consumption per Capita. Students could analyze these maps, and the accompanying statistical data to reach conclusions regarding the characteristics of First, Second and Third World Countries. Using this data, the various issues relating to each group of countries could be addressed and analyzed.

Regional issues can also be investigated using ArcView as a learning tool. In the example to the right, students are required to find the optimal location of a pesticide plant in Southern Ontario. Various factors may be taken into account, including transportation networks, proximity to large urban centers, location of pest infestations, target crop distribution, and the amount of manufacturing and chemical industries in the area. Students can define the location criteria, and analyze the region to determine the best location.
