GIS at Middle School Level

At the intermediate level, students can explore topics that involve locations or regions of varying characteristics. Students can analyze how a topic relates to conditions in a given place, or to similar features in other places.

For example, the ArcView Project to the right illustrates an assignment which combines the study of regions and environmental studies. This project focuses on frog mortality within a mid-sized city. The factors affecting the frog mortality are mapped, and conclusions are drawn regarding why the frogs are dying. These conclusions are based on the common characteristics of those areas with a high frog mortality. As an extension to this assignment, the students play the roles of government, industry and concerned citizens to decide the best course of action to follow in order to save the frogs.
