Local Business Study!

The Network Analyst extension gives ArcView users networking capabilities and can help solve common network problems. This includes spatial analysis on any layers that contain lines that connect (often road networks). This exercise will introduce the functionality available with Network Analyst, including Best Route, Closest Facility and Service Area.

This exercise can be completed using ArcView version 9.1 with the Network Analyst extension version 9.1. This exercise can be completed using the ArcCanada data for Kingston, Ontario found on ArcCanada 3.0/3.1, disk 4 in conjunction with a free Network Dataset provided by DMTI Spatial. Please see the note at the bottom of this page for details on how to obtain this dataset.

The Local Business Study lesson is designed to introduce new users to ArcView's Network Analyst extension and its functionality. The tasks for this exercise are:

  • Find the Best Route for a new airport/hotel shuttle service

  • Determine which pizzeria should deliver a pizza to a specific hotel, using the Find Closest Facility function

  • Find Service Areas for all pizzerias and locate a new pizza place to better serve under-serviced areas
  • Remember to read all instructions carefully! Good luck and have fun!

NOTE! This exercise requires a special Network Dataset which is available to Canadian K-12 teachers courtesy of DMTI Spatial in Markham, Ontario.
