Manitoba Airport Location

The Spatial Analyst extension give ArcView GIS full raster modeling capabilities. This exercise will introduce the difference between vector and raster data, and will demonstrate how to convert vector data to raster data to take advantage of the additional functionality available with Spatial Analyst.

This exercise relies on a special Data Set that can be downloaded on this page. You must download and extract (unzip) the data set before beginning the exercise.

The Manitoba Airport Location Lesson is designed to introduce new users to ArcView's Spatial Analyst extension and its functionality. The task for this exercise is to locate a new airport in rural Manitoba. The two criteria that must be met are:

  • The new airport must be located more than 100km from an existing airport
  • The new airport must be located near a concentration of small communities
  • Remember to read all instructions carefully! Good luck and have fun!

The data set for the Manitoba Airport Location Lesson has been clipped from a much larger data set found on ArcCanada 3.0. Y ou will download a file called manitoba.exe. This file will extract the necessary data files to a folder called c:\manitoba.

Before you begin this lesson you will need to download the data that is used throughout the exercise. The dataset for this lesson is available in .ZIP or .EXE format. Using the .EXE file, the data will be extracted to the correct folder when you double-click the downloaded file to execute it. If you are unable to download the .EXE file due to your network or service provider's security measures, download the .ZIP file and be sure to extract the data to the folder indicated in the lesson instructions.
