Exploring Pukaskwa National Park

Pukaskwa National Park's exceptional beauty is revealed in its vistas of Lake Superior and in the rugged, ancient landscape of the Canadian Shield and northern forest. The spirit of the wilderness envelops those who explore this special place. The only wilderness national park in Ontario, Pukaskwa was established in 1983 to protect 1878 square kilometres of an ecosystem that features boreal forest and Lake Superior shoreline.

The only road access to Pukaskwa, the largest National Park in Ontario, is located about a 15 minute drive off the Trans Canada Highway, near Marathon and Pic River First Nation. Hattie Cove, located in the northwest corner of Pukaskwa, is the centre for most park activities and services.

Purpose:
Your class is going to visit the Pukaskwa National Park for a camping trip. Your group has been asked to collect GPS readings at 10 locations in the Hattie Cove area of the park. You will use these readings to create an interactive map that can be used in the Visitor Centre, demonstrating to visitors some of the highlights of the park. Since you do not have access to a computer lab at the park, you will put everything together in ArcView (ArcMap) when you return to school.
