Local Dataset

ESRI Canada and DMTI Spatial Inc. are working to provide schools with a complete data set of their local area. Recognizing the importance of community studies, this data will allow students to study their own community, using GIS to address local issues and problems.

Points of Interest and Enumeration Areas
The Enhanced Points of Interest file from DMTI includes the location of health care facilities, hotels and accommodations, car rental agencies and all educational institutions (K-12 and post secondary). Using this information, students can examine some of the business activity that takes place in their local community. Furthermore, students can research the socio-economic structure of their community using included data such as income, population and employment statistics available at the enumeration area level.

 Land Use and Local Streets
Your data set also includes the local streets in your area - this is a comprehensive local street network file that also contains address ranges used for geocoding. You will also receive land use and topography for your area (where available). Students can use this data to examine the patterns of land cover and land use in their community. They may also explore ideas such as the allocation of green space, the proximity of industrial areas to residential areas, rural-urban fringe issues and more.
