Product Overview

ArcGIS Engine is a developer product introduced with ArcGIS 9 that contains everything you need to build and deploy applications that deliver custom GIS solutions.

With ArcGIS Engine, developers are able to add dynamic mapping and GIS capabilities to existing applications or build their own unique mapping programs. ArcGIS Engine provides well-defined, cross language objects called ArcObjects, the same objects on which the ArcGIS Desktop products are built.

ArcGIS Engine has the following two product components:

Why Use ArcGIS Engine?

Many users require focused, industry specific access to GIS from within familiar software applications. They need much less than the full-featured GIS products, yet they may require access to sophisticated GIS logic in their application. In cases where users need customized access to GIS, ArcGIS Engine provides an alternative to general software applications.

With ArcGIS Engine, you can

  • Efficiently build and deploy custom ArcGIS applications on the desktop.

  • Embed GIS logic in non-GIS-centric applications.

  • Leverage the mapmaking capabilities of ArcGIS Desktop to quickly deploy GIS applications containing quality cartographic maps.

  • Build focused GIS data editing applications that take full advantage of the capabilities of the geodatabase (using the Geodatabase Update extension).

  • Build globe visualization applications that expose spatial and 3D analysis (using the Spatial or 3D extensions).

  • Build and deploy custom network applications (using the Network extension).

Who Uses ArcGIS Engine?

ArcGIS Engine allows you to use GIS and mapping technology to solve problems beyond the traditional GIS-centric community. ArcGIS Engine will be of particular interest to

  • The technically sophisticated, GIS-focused firm
  • Large organizations that need to develop enterprise GIS and mapping solutions
  • Developers of commercial third party solutions for the GIS community and vertical industries
  • Developers of non-GIS-centric applications who want to add GIS and mapping functionality

With ArcGIS Engine, you can leverage the power of ArcGIS to quickly build the right GIS application for your users.
