ArcSDE
Note: At ArcGIS 9.2, ArcSDE is no longer a stand-alone product. It is now known as ArcSDE technology and is included with both the ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server products.

The ArcSDE technology incorporated into ArcGIS Server is used to access multiuser geographic databases stored in relational database management systems (RDBMSs). It is an integrated part of ArcGIS Server and a core element of any enterprise GIS solution. Its primary role is to act as the database access engine to spatial data and related attributes and metadata stored in an RDBMS.
ArcSDE technology enhances data management performance, extends the range of data types that can be stored in an RDBMS, enables schema portability between RDBMSs, and offers configuration flexibility. ArcSDE technology supports reading and writing of multiple standards including OGC for simple features, the ISO standard for spatial types, and the Oracle Spatial proprietary format (among other data storage options).
