Fredericton, NB - New Brunswick Community College in Moncton was recently presented with an Award of Excellence for their GIS Post-Diploma Technology Program. Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, presented the Award of Excellence in recognition of New Brunswick Community College's (NBCC) commitment to the development of a GIS technology program in New Brunswick. More than 100 GIS professionals were on hand for the presentation, which was one of the highlights of ESRI Canada's Atlantic Regional User Conference.
"The Award of Excellence is going to a very deserving organization that is dedicated to the advancement of GIS within the province, through the training and development of highly skilled GIS specialists," said Mr. Miller. "Their commitment to building a high quality program to train students to meet the needs of business and government is a very important asset supporting the growth of GIS in this region."
The GIS Post-Diploma Technology program was first offered in 1997 and has continued to grow in stature and recognition. The role of the NBCC, this program in particular, is to develop a skilled workforce that meets the needs of the private sector and government agencies. The program has evolved in order to develop core GIS skills and complement the existing skills and knowledge of the students. Practical learning is emphasized through an extensive project based curriculum drawn from the needs of the GIS community.
"Completing the NBCC GIS Technology program has opened doors for our graduates and has helped to create opportunities where they did not exist before," said Sam Rideout, Instructor of Technology, GIS Post-Diploma Technology Program, New Brunswick Community College.
The GIS Post Diploma Technology Program has been extremely successful in having its graduates start rewarding and meaningful GIS careers based on the skills developed through this program, with almost 90% finding jobs in the GIS industry.
