Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines receives award for their Geology Ontario and CLAIMaps applications

Sault Ste. Marie, ON - The Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines' Mines and Minerals Division and the Land and Resources Cluster were presented with an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada's Regional User Conference in Sault Ste. Marie today. They were presented with the award in recognition of their efforts in creating GIS-based applications for disseminating Ontario's geology and mining information to key stakeholders.

The Ministry works to generate new wealth and benefits for the residents of Ontario by providing geological information gathering and interpretation in support of Ontario's mining and mineral exploration sectors, aggregate sector, and the administration of Ontario's Mining Act. The Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines collects, analyzes, and publishes valuable information about the state of the mining and mineral industries, scientific research as well as specific information about the location and quality of mineral deposits and occurrences. Field staff throughout the province provide consultative services to the industry through all phases of the mining sequence, and include resident geologists, geoscientists, mining recorders, and mineral development officers.

"The Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has implemented GIS throughout their Mines and Mineral Division," said John Houweling, Ontario Region Manager, ESRI Canada. "They have spent a great deal of time, effort, and resources in creating an impressive number of GIS-based applications for both staff and the public. We are very pleased to be recognizing the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines with this award."

"The mining and mineral exploration sectors contribute seven billion dollars annually to Ontario's economy with much of this wealth being generated in the North," said Brian Berdusco, Project Manager, Land and Resources Cluster. "Developing new, powerful and innovative internet based services reflects Ontario's status as a global leader in mining and geoscientific research."

The new Geology Ontario website provides unprecedented access to 85,000 maps, reports, and mining assessment files representing over 2,000,000 pages and 150,000 maps. Hundreds of digital data products are also available for download. Simple and complex Boolean search components facilitate rapid discovery of pertinent mineral exploration and historical information. With over two dozen accessible map services, integrating geophysical, geochemical and geological data into client held proprietary geospatial databases accentuates the power of this new decision support system. Access to 300 gigabytes of products and reports through a state-of-the-art geospatial portal ensures rapid dissemination of geoscientific information which, in turn, promotes sustainable development initiatives and the responsible use of the Province's wealth of mineral resources. This has directly resulted in a diversification of the client base from traditional prospectors and mining and mineral exploration companies to municipal land planners, ecotourism, conservation authorities, water resource management organizations, and even groups such as Scouts Canada.

Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines' CLAIMaps website provides continuous online access to province-wide digitized maps. Prospectors, the public, industry, and potential investors world-wide have access to a large database of mining land information including the location of over 214,000 active mining claim units across the province. This information is available at no cost and updated daily, vastly improving the accuracy and accessibility of data for users. C LAIMaps annually produces 3,000,000 map images and 70,000 final maps. Clients can also extract and download mining land parcels for integration into their own GIS systems. Daily updated mining land tenure identifies land status and ownership resulting in informed land acquisition for the purposes of responsible mineral exploration.

ESRI Canada presents Awards of Excellence annually to organizations and individuals across the country for their outstanding achievement in the application of GIS technology.
