London, ON - The Town of LaSalle was presented with an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada's Regional User Conference in London today. The Town of LaSalle was presented with the award in recognition of their efforts in creating a corporate geographic information system (GIS). More than 200 people were on hand for the presentation, which was one of the highlights of the conference.
"The Town of LaSalle implemented core ESRI GIS technology to make mapping accessible to both municipal staff and to their citizens," said Peter McLaren, Account Manager, ESRI Canada. "They have spent a great deal of time, effort, and resources in creating an impressive number of geographic layers that represent many physical features in their municipality."
The Town's Planning department provides a broad range of policy planning and land development approval and review services. Planning department staff is committed to an open and inclusive planning process which builds and promotes community partnerships and enables them to deal with evolving community planning, land use, growth management, environmental, and development issues. The Planning department uses GIS to manage its official plan which provides the policy direction used by Council, the Committee of Adjustment, municipal staff, landowners, and other affected stakeholders when making decisions with respect to land use planning, natural heritage protection, transportation, municipal infrastructure, and other community planning and land development matters town-wide.
The municipality uses GIS to communicate with key stakeholders through "infoLaSalle", a web-based interactive site that is an integral part of how business is conducted. Through the site staff in all departments are able to answer inquiries from the public and to conduct business in a more timely and cost-effective manner. On February 25, 2005, the Town of LaSalle made "infoLasalle" available to the public. Residents, businesses, and visitors are now be able to retrieve, view and print a broad range of property, topographic, public service, and community planning related information and maps from their home or office computers.
"We are honoured to receive the ESRI Canada Award of Excellence," said Larry Silani, Director of Planning, Town of LaSalle. "The Town's web-based GIS is being used extensively by our residents, businesses, and staff to retrieve, print, and view detailed property, planning, topographic, and infrastructure-related data. We have received numerous compliments from all our user groups, and with the continued support of Council, LaSalle staff will be further developing and expanding the scope and breadth of information that is available through "infoLaSalle". This award is important to the Town of LaSalle, and confirms that the work we have completed to date is on the leading edge for communities of our size."
ESRI Canada presents Awards of Excellence annually to organizations and individuals across the country for their outstanding achievement in the application of GIS technology.
