Guelph Hydro's Transition to ESRI's ArcGIS

Toronto, ON - Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. (GHESI) is a Local Distribution Company (LDC) which provides electrical distribution services to approximately 44,000 industrial, commercial and residential customers in the City of Guelph. In the mid-1990s GHESI started development of an Automated Mapping / Facilities Management (AM/FM) solution for their Engineering and Operations divisions. This system evolved to include integration with some corporate data systems, primarily the Customer Information System.

In 2003 GHESI undertook a review of the existing mapping and facilities management platform, and determined that a new GIS was required to allow for the continued expansion and enhancement of the mapping system and related applications. This review led to the selection of ESRI's ArcGIS platform to replace their legacy AM/FM system. ArcGIS provides a robust out-of-the-box solution for many of the utility's mapping, asset tracking and day-to-day operational needs. The system is designed to be scalable, allowing for future growth and access to information throughout the organization. ArcGIS offers benefits to GHESI including support for multiple users to maintain data and improved graphical display of their data.

GHESI has coupled its knowledge of the electric distribution business and utility operations with its desire for continuous improvement to integrate GIS into its day-to-day business activities. For example, the new mapping system with its reporting capabilities, in the form of maps and tables, has improved their ability to respond to the Ontario Energy Board reporting requirements.

"ESRI's ArcGIS software provides the tools necessary to meet the immediate requirements of our utility in this changing electric distribution sector," said Dan Amyot, GIS Supervisor, Guelph Hydro. "The out-of-the-box functionality and open technology architecture were the primary reasons for adopting this system."

GHESI plans to leverage this GIS technology investment by further integrating GIS with other business tools such as system analysis. The first priority will be to integrate electric distribution system engineering analysis tools so that the GIS provides the required network connectivity model.
