London, ON - The County of Lambton was presented with an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada's annual ESRI Regional User Conference in London today. Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, presented the Award in recognition of the County of Lambton's efforts in creating a web mapping site for the local farming community's nutrient management planning. More than 200 GIS professionals were on hand for the presentation, which was one of the highlights of the conference.
"The County of Lambton's work is progressive and their effort in creating a web mapping site to assist farmers with their nutrient management plans sets an example for other local governments across Canada," said Mr. Miller. "The Award of Excellence is going to a deserving organization - I applaud their efforts."
The County of Lambton identified nutrient management as a priority during community sessions held in 1999-2000. At a series of community meetings, farmers stated that nutrient management would soon be regulated by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and noted that they lacked the tools to address these regulations.
As a result, the County of Lambton designed an easy-to-use web mapping solution to assist farmers, and the consultants that help them, produce nutrient management plans. Farmers who must file nutrient management plans can now find the information they need at the County of Lambton's online GIS (www.lambtononline.ca/maps). They can easily create and print maps of their farms that show soils, buildings, woodlots, wells and surface water, as well as the required setbacks. Farmers follow a step-by-step guide on using the system to get the maps they need. In addition, the County trained all the library staff at its 23 rural branches how to use the system to provide assistance to farmers.
The project was funded in part by the GeoSmart program of the Ministry of Natural Resources.
