London, ON - The City of Windsor Geomatics Division received an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada's 2008 Regional Users Conference in London today. Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, presented the Award in recognition of the City of Windsor's early adoption of the latest Internet enabled GIS technologies to improve public access to information through the City's information portal. "The Award of Excellence is going to an organization that has extensively used spatial technologies to improve its internal business processes," said Mr. Miller. "The City of Windsor has now turned its attention to the City's public information portal and added the latest web GIS technology available. Both visitors and residents of the City of Windsor will now have access to a wealth of spatial information. I applaud their vision and exceptional implementation."
The City of Windsor is a pillar community within the province of Ontario and home to 216,000 residents. It is a major gateway to North American markets and one of the busiest border crossings to Canada's largest trading partner, the United States. It is a quality city full of history and potential, with a diverse culture, a durable economy and a healthy environment where citizens share a strong sense of belonging and a collective pride of place.
The City of Windsor has a reputation of embarking on projects that are both community focused and provide measurable benefits to the municipal organization. The City of Windsor was a pioneer in the adoption of its 311 system and became a model organization for others to follow. Since 1995, the City of Windsor has utilized spatial technologies to manage City assets and infrastructure and as a result its data holdings are extensive. In 2006, the City of Windsor's Geomatics Division envisioned an internet mapping application that could disseminate much of this valuable data to the public, including tourists, investors, and other interested parties. In 2007 the City used ArcGIS Server 9.2 to develop the "MapMyCity" application providing spatial data and tools through the City's public information portal.
The City of Windsor's preference was to build something quickly and provide general GIS functionality to the public in Phase I. To do this, it was decided that ESRI Canada's professional services would be utilized for rapid implementation. The City of Windsor can now prepare cartographically enhanced maps, data and tasks using the standard ArcGIS Desktop products and quickly publish those maps to the MapMyCity GIS portal. MapMyCity - Phase II will include an enhanced user interface, tight integration into the Windsor City portal and specific application focus to areas such as tourism, recreation, business, and economic development.
